Internet Service [continued]
Types of Access, continued...
T1
If price is no object, you might consider bringing a T1 up to your home or office. Yes, T1's are available up in Nederland, although they are not for the faint of heart. Depending on the provider you choose and the cost of your local loop, this could be $500-1000 +.
High Speed Wireless
There are several companies who offer high speed, line-of-sight, wireless access in the mountains. Depending on your area, you may have one or more provider to choose from. Price, speed, bandwidth, contract requirements, expertise, and level of service varies among providers - be sure to ask whether your provider offers after-hours support or any uptime guarantees.
Satellite
There are two main providers of satellite internet, Starband and DirectPC (now called SatCast). The service is just ok for better-than-dialup speeds on the downloads, but the upload speed is marginal and there is a latency issue which makes game playing online nearly impossible. My experience with StarBand was that the initial investment is about $800 for equipment and install and the service was $69.99 a month.
